The Beginnings of NOTEL

Shodoshima, an island in the Seto Inland Sea.
NOTEL sits in the island's rural interior.

"Hitoyama" is a historic farming village that dates back to the Heian period.
NOTEL began when we decided to renovate the former elementary school at its center
and create a place to stay.

We who founded NOTEL live here in Hitoyama.
As farmers, architects, shop owners, designers—we wear many hats,
making miso, splitting firewood, growing vegetables and rice.
Every day we experience the richness of rural life.

We hope that during your stay at NOTEL, you'll feel the unique culture and atmosphere of the countryside,
and perhaps discover something new in yourself.

HOMEMAKERS Farm&Cafe

The Mitumura couple—Takahiro and Hikari, who are also NOTEL owners—have practiced organic farming in Hitoyama for over 10 years. Enjoy dishes made with seasonal vegetables from Hitoyama, plus seasonal sweets, coffee, and tea. Stop by for a late-afternoon break or for lunch.

Notel Store

A shop for food and daily necessities.
We stock treats and everyday items that bring a smile—from ingredients for tonight's dinner to souvenirs.

Hitoyama: a mountain village with 300 years of tradition

Hitoyama, where NOTEL is located, has been a farming community since ancient times—from the manor estates of old to the shogunate's direct rule in the Edo period.
Traditions like the insect-driving ritual and rural kabuki are still carried on by the people who live here.

In the village, irrigation channels wind between the houses, and tending the fields and mountains is part of daily life.
It feels as if not only the culture but the way of life has continued uninterrupted from a long history.

Hitoyama, too, faces depopulation; abandoned fields in the distance are gradually returning to forest.
Whether we can pass this village on to the next generation—
that, we feel, depends on us now.

NOTEL stands like a gateway to Hitoyama.
We hope that by staying at NOTEL and experiencing this place,
more people will come to enjoy living in the countryside, in harmony with nature.
